It is a 6-digit coding system used for the classification of individual businesses by industry. NAICS was developed by the United States, Canada, and Mexico to produce comparable data and is widely used by government and business. The NAICS system uses a consistent principle where economic units that use like processes to produce goods or services are grouped together. It replaces the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system that was in use since the 1930s.
